Toshiba: Multi-screen Strategy, JournE Touch

Toshiba has now launched into the new sector of home tablet PC’s with the release of their JournE Touch tablet during the IFA 09 show in Berlin. They are supporting a more global strategy of multiple screens which provides services on all screens (Toshiba) in the house, including the television, the computer or smart phones. We can’t help but notice that this aspect has been looked at in this JournE Touch tablet. Here are our first impressions.

Toshiba: Multi-screen Strategy, JournE Touch

October 02nd, 2009 - 07:03 am ET by C. D.

Toshiba conf 01Toshiba presented their global strategy in September for the end of this year (and a bit after) by emphasizing their multi-screen strategy allowing you to see your content on all of the houses screens (and a little further).

The idea is simple: offer a Web portal for free from where the user can use services and receive notifications from their contacts, viewing photos, video and other messages.

To use this, there are of course interaction possibilities between the Toshiba devices (television, computer, tablet, smart phone) around which the home internet connection is based, with the objective being to have ease of use (since everything in the family is taken into account) and the ergonomics.

Taking up this new group strategy, Toshiba is hoping to develop a new segment which they have been working on for a long time but which has only just started to come together thanks to competitive subscriptions with phone operators. The home tablet will be able to access the internet and its services via the homes WiFi network, with Toshiba’s offer being the JournE Touch tablet revealed during the IFA 09 show in Berlin at the beginning of September.

The screens, how to control your house

Toshiba conf 02With an average of 11 electronic devices present in the home and an average of 5 hours and 37 minutes spent each day in front of the screens for entertainment, to receive information, to communicate and to shop (and sometimes even to work), the house has become a location of interaction between the different zones (lounge room, bedroom, kitchen) which means you cant be shut out by walls.

Toshiba is therefore looking to launch their own portal in 2010 like the multi-service entry points which is accessible via numerous devices and which should make communication between individuals easier.

Toshiba U500 noir 01Pascal Lardellier, an Internet sociologist studying new technologies and author of articles analyzing new relationship modes based around the Internet, explains that the interest of doing this is that it provides another communication method to open up relationships, and not isolation and closed relations.

The conception of the Toshiba portal is to be designed by the French company Wizitivi, a company who specializes in TV streaming (they are known for “TV Wizards”) and who have no difficulty in working on centralized streaming of the future users of connected Toshiba products.

Toshiba conf 03The portal works as an entry point to all of the services selected, with notifications from other members of the family, relaying them in an easy way. When it comes to sharing photos or videos, like on YouTube, you simply need to click on the link from any of the Toshiba devices to be able to use view them.

And like the family computer in the office which everyone uses, the portal can be accessed from any device in any location, from smart phones, to the television and computers.

It should be noted that home usage has been emphasized by Toshiba looking to exploit this information exchange portal in the education and health fields, creating ad hoc vertical applications.

Their multi-screens strategy is based around the JournE Touch Internet tablet, which promises easy and immediate access to the web, without even having to use a computer.

  1. 1 - Global Strategy
  2. 2 - JournE Touch Home Tablet
  3. 3 - Our first impressions

Toshiba JournE Touch 02It was at the IFA 09 show in Berlin that Toshiba revealed their home tablet, the JournE Touch, which is the launch of a new product type that combines both mobility aspects and multimedia, while having flexible use for the whole family in all rooms of the house.

The electronics group seems to really believe this strategy which is yet to be really present on the market, but a sector with great potential according to the strategy that they presented. The strategy is relevant to their range of products, from the computer to their smartphones and even televisions.

This offer also provides access to the Web, as the tablet is connected to your internet connection via WiFi, which means you don’t have to turn the computer on for internet access if it isn’t near by.

The tablet has a window open to the Internet, and you can carry this anywhere in the house that you want that has WiFi coverage, providing you with multiple uses depending on where it is located: lounge room, bed room, kitchen… As well as this, it is possible to use all of the services that it offers, which is an interesting point when it is coupled with a mobile phone carriers subscription. Discussions about this aspect are currently ongoing.

Toshiba JournE Touch 03Concerning the tablet, the JournE Touch comes with a 7” tactile display which is used to control everything. Looking closer, there is no buttons present and the connectivity options are hidden under a flap. You will have a USB 2.0 port and a slot for a memory card as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The tablet uses the Windows CE operating system and comes with 1GB of internal memory. Its dimensions are 189 x 133 x 14 mm, it weighs 450g and comes with a wireless connection. The finish is of good quality and the controls are good for a 7” tablet which tries to be a good compromise between a compact screen while remaining visible.

Toshiba JournE Touch 06With its different colours including pink, green and yellow, the JounE Touch has its own style which is comparable to high-tech products while remaining present and visible in the house.

The JournE Touch can be controlled by a finger and has an interface with large buttons on multiple pages, providing you with the devices functions and services. You will also find access to the Flickr, YouTube, Picasa and Facebook community pages, as well as RSS streams, the weather, a web browser and the Acetrax VoD service.

  1. 1 - Global Strategy
  2. 2 - JournE Touch Home Tablet
  3. 3 - Our first impressions

We should firstly point out that the JournE Touch tablet presented was a pre-version which will see improvements made to it before its launch in November. With this product, Toshiba will complete its strategy to be present in the house by offering constant Internet connectivity which you are able to use without needing a computer (not even a laptop).

The choice of a 7” diagonal screen is justified so as to offer easy controls with good visibility. The display comes with a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels, which provides good comfort when reading web sites and displayed text.

Musical player; access to YouTube videos

The WiFi configuration is relatively easy to access and we note that the USB port can support a 3G stick, which could eventually allow you to transform this home tablet into a roaming one.

The tactile interface is made up of two shortcut buttons which are rather reactive and which provides the user with a range of services. Some seem to have been well adapted to the JournE Touch’s characteristics, while others not so well.

Playing videos from YouTube or following RSS streams is made easy through the presence of large tactile buttons which are placed for easy access. In the same way, the music and player software poses no problems, while the weather channel, despite looking a little bland, completes its task.

On other points, this Windows CE works without any problem. The calendar is the same as its always been, while the buttons on it are a little to close for effective use with one finger. The Web browser is Internet Explorer with the buttons being easy to use, although the tabs were originally designed with a touch pen in mind, and the slide bars are difficult to use.

At the same time, everything can be done via a virtual keyboard which, while being reactive, will require you to be patient while entering the URL with all of the letters. It goes without saying that the use of community web sites like Facebook may be more for viewing rather then commenting.

Calendar; enter by a virtual keyboard

Besides these small problems which only affect part of the tablet’s functions, the JournE Touch is overall reactive with the device being correct. Music and videos play swiftly and the passage from one service to another is done relatively quickly.

The JournE Touch tablet completely fills its role as an easy to use multimedia device, despite a screen that is a little shiny, which could be a slight problem when in direct light. You should therefore avoid its use when outside.

Toshiba JournE Touch 13Finally, another important point in this product genre with a mobile aspect is the battery life, which is in the average when the WiFi connection is active. Unless this is improved before its release, you will be able to count on about 5 hours of mixed use and up to ten or so hours in just multimedia use.

The Toshiba JournE Touch tablet is therefore an interesting entry point to the market which is positioned slightly above home tablets and which should open the way to a whole range of products.

This said, while the design is just one aspect, and the idea is a good one to try and exploit, there general interest in this kind of product can only be developed if the ease of use and the price are irreproachable. We didn’t get the impression that this objective has been completely achieved here, which may limit its attractiveness.

The JournE Touch tablet will be sold from November onwards for a price situated between 360 and $430.
